Everton defender Ben Godfrey will be out for three months after undergoing surgery on a leg he fractured after just 10 minutes of the season.

Manager Frank Lampard is waiting to find out how long he will be without another centre-back as Yerry Mina is due to see a specialist later this week for the ankle ligament damage he suffered in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat by Chelsea has moved.

Everton are looking to sign Wolves captain Conor Coady on loan, and their need for defensive reinforcements grew when they lost two centre-backs on the opening day of the campaign.

Godfrey, who was injured while challenging Kai Havertz, could actually be out until Boxing Day, with Everton’s last game before the Premier League winter break due to be played on November 12. If he doesn’t play then, the former Norwich player will miss 15 league games.

A three-month absence will shatter his faint hopes of a place in England’s World Cup squad. Godfrey has won two caps and was part of Gareth Southgate’s 33-man provisional group for Euro 2020 but was left out when it was cut to 26 players.

Without Mina and Godfrey, Lampard, who has deployed a back three, has just three senior options in James Tarkowski, Mason Holgate and Michael Keane, although he moved left-back Vitalii Mykolenko into the middle when Mina left on Saturday and captain Seamus Coleman should be back soon be fit.
