Apple says there are two bugs that allow rogue apps to “execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges”.

This means hackers could use apps to target deep parts of yours iPhone.

Worse, Apple says it’s aware of reports that the issue was “possibly being actively exploited” by crooks.

These are “zero-day” bugs – meaning the bug was out there and may have been exploited before a fix was available.

Thankfully, it’s now possible to patch the holes simply by updating your iPhone.

We’ll reveal how to update your iPhone in detail at the end of this article, but a quick way to check is to go to Settings > General > Software Update.

Updating your iPhone regularly is one of the best defenses against hackers.

This is Apple’s way of delivering its critical security updates that keep you safe.

These updates fix bugs that could be exploited by criminals.

You still need strong passwords and good online hygiene, but security updates are also crucial.

You should turn on automatic updates for iPhone so you always have the latest updates.

But it’s also worth checking for new updates manually to make sure you get them as soon as possible.

This latest issue was reported by an anonymous researcher, according to Apple.

The new update will be called iOS15.4.1 and is available for the following devices:

  • iPhone 6S or newer
  • iPad Pro (all models)
  • iPad Air 2 or higher
  • iPad 5th generation or later
  • iPad mini 4 or newer
  • iPod touch (7th generation)

If your device no longer supports iOS updates, consider upgrading soon to avoid major cybersecurity risks.

How to update your iPhone

Before any major iPhone update, you should back up your phone.

That’s because it’s easy to go wrong with an update and you don’t want to lose your valuable data like photos or videos.

To do this, simply go to the iCloud settings on your iPhone and turn on the “iCloud Backup” feature.

Alternatively, connect your phone to iTunes and select the “Back Up Now” option.

The easiest way to update your iPhone is wirelessly – just follow these simple steps:

  • Plug your iPhone into a power outlet and connect to a Wi-Fi network
  • Tap Settings > General > Software update
  • Tap Download and Install.
  • Tap Download and Install to update instantly, or plug in your phone overnight to automatically update while you sleep.
  • You may need to enter your passcode

If you don’t have enough space on your phone for the update, Apple may ask you if some apps can be temporarily removed from your phone.

But don’t worry: Apple will reinstall all deleted apps, including any data you have stored in those apps.
