Every road but loose is a controversial project for Clint Eastwood to choose

Eastwood, in his typical concise style, to Graham Fuller of Interview Magazine that he knows “Every Way But Loose” is a “problematic picture”, but he doesn’t really care. “I’ve made problematic pictures before,” he says, “and sometimes people tell you they’re a problem and other times they’re not.”

He was referring in part to the 1977 film “The Gauntlet,” a non-stop stupid action movie that Eastwood was so preoccupied with directing. Critics beat him for it at the time, but audiences ignored him. So when “All Ways Are Loose” came out, he offered his own advice. “You have to lead the audience in different directions, or they might end up knocking you down,” says Eastwood. “Everybody – my agent, my lawyer – they said don’t do ‘All the way but loose,’ and even one of them saw it, one of the people running the studio was thought it was going to fail. I always thought it was kind of a trendy script with orangutans and stuff. Some people understood it and some people didn’t, but the public seemed to enjoy it.”
