“Everyone was sitting there thinking, what just happened?” – Chris Rock’s mother speaks out

Chris Rock’s mother has opened up about the controversial incident in which Will Smith slapped the comedian at the Oscars.

During last month’s Academy Awards, Smith jumped onstage to slap Chris after the comedian joked about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved haircut.

Speak with WIS TVRose told Rock that, like many people, she initially believed the altercation was staged, but realized that wasn’t the case when Smith yelled at Rock to “keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth.”

“When he hit Chris, he hit us all,” Rose said. “He really hit me because if you hurt my kid, you hurt me.”

Pinkett Smith’s shaved haircut is due to her alopecia, with the actress rolling her eyes at Chris’ joke.

However, Rose said that Smith’s behavior completely overshadowed his subsequent win for Best Actor King Richard.

“No one heard his speech,” she said. “No one was able to just be in the moment because everyone was sitting there thinking, ‘What just happened?'”

After the altercation, Smith apologized and resigned from the academy on April 1.

On April 8, the academy voted to bar Smith from Academy Awards for the next 10 years.

Pinkett Smith addressed the incident in the trailer for the new series of her Facebook Watch series Conversation at the Red Tableand said: “In light of what has happened over the past few weeks, the Smith family has been focused on deep healing.”
