Everything Everywhere All At Once won the top prize at Gotham Awards 2022

Everything Everywhere All At Once won the top prize for best film at the 2022 Gotham Awards.

The film’s directors praised other independent film producers and their audiences for “doing the necessary impossible job” at the 32nd annual ceremony on Monday.

The independent film celebration, held in New York, kicks off awards season and is seen by many as the highlight for many larger events, including the Oscars.

Everything Everywhere All At Once stars Michelle Yeoh, Hong Gia Bao, Tu Hy Vien, Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan, who also received the Gotham Award for best supporting actor.

Accepting the award for best feature film, co-director Daniel Scheinert said: “This film has been celebrated by the Asian American community, by the immigrant community, by people with weird brains, people who are traumatized. overwhelmed or sad.

“This award is for you… your stories are important. You are important, so stay there.

Co-director Daniel Kwan added: “It’s hard to tell (one) origin story (today) and even harder (to tell a) standalone origin story.

“And for an indie original story to really find an audience, to be recognized as just a miracle and so everyone in this room, I think you’re doing the necessary impossible job.”

In his moving speech as he accepted the award for Best Supporting Actor, Quan, who is best known for his role as a child in Indiana Jones, thanked the directors for giving him a “second chance.”

“At this time last year, I was just hoping to get a job… just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, it came,” he said.

“Usually, in indie films where actors who would otherwise have no chance find their chance – I am that actor.

“For the first time in a very long time, I got a second chance.”

Elsewhere, a stellar performance in the lead went to Danielle Deadwyler for her performance in Till, who was unable to accept the award in person.

The American actress edged out homegrown talents, including Thandie Newton, and Irish actors Colin Farrell and Paul Mescal in this category.

But the British talent has received some recognition, with Ben Wishaw being awarded outstanding performance in a new series for his role in the BBC medical comedy This Is Going To Hurt.

Throughout the evening, well-known names were honored, including Adam Sandler, who was named performer (Evan Agostini/AP).

The series also received a nomination in the category Breakthrough Drama – long genre (over 40 minutes), but lost to Pachinko.

Throughout the evening, tributes were made to members of the industry including Adam Sandler and Michelle Williams, who received the performer’s tribute, and the late Sidney Poitier, who received icon honors.

Sandler gave a humorous speech, which he said was written by his daughters, which he delivered with a fake South American accent.

Poitier’s award was received by his daughters, who described their father’s “deep, passionate love” for independent film and filmmakers. The event also saw a newly announced charity campaign in honor of the late actor – the Gotham Sidney Poitier Initiative, announced by Jonathan Majors.

Last year, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Elena Ferrante adaptation The Lost Daughter won the Gotham Awards in four categories, including best picture.
