The Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights is entirely separate from the EU – and the UK’s membership was unaffected by Brexit.

In fact, after World War II, the UK helped draft the European Convention on Human Rights, which is enforced by the Court.

Winston Churchill was instrumental in shaping the 1950 Pact agreed in Rome.

But it was not enshrined in British law until 48 years later, when Tony Blair’s Labor government passed the Human Rights Act in 1998.

Some Brexit advocates voting in 2016 believed that leaving the EU would stop all European judges from having access to British life.

But leaving the bloc only ended the role of the European Court of Justice – an entirely separate body.

Conservative governments have been committed for more than a decade to producing a British Bill of Rights that would replace, or at least accompany, the ECHR.

In fact, the latest pledge came just a month ago, when Prince Charles, reading the Queen’s speech for the absent monarch, told Parliament: “My ministers will restore the balance of power between the legislature and the courts by adopting a Bill of Rights.” introduce.”

But such a move could put further pressure on the fragile peace in Northern Ireland.

The ECHR is a key element of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement in the province.
