EVO 2022 won’t have any Super Smash Bros games because of Nintendo

Nintendo has made the decision not to have any Super Smash Bros. participating in EVO 2022, the world’s largest fighting game tournament now owned by Sony, for the first time since 2007.

EVO shared a letter announcing the news on Twitter ahead of the EVO 2022 announcement show on March 8 at 5 p.m. PTT / 8 p.m. ET.

“Join us March 8 at 5pm PST on for the EVO 2022 announcement,” EVO wrote. “While we’re grateful for all the great games that joined us later this year in Las Vegas, we wanted to let you know in advance that Super Smash Bros. won’t be making a comeback. .

“Since 2007, we’ve seen historic Super Smash Bros. moments created at EVO events. We’re saddened that Nintendo has chosen not to continue that legacy with us this year. In the future, we hope to once again celebrate the Super Smash Bros. community alongside them.”

Nintendo’s choice to not participate in EVO follows Sony buys fighting game league in 2021. At the time of the acquisition announcement, Nintendo said that it wished the show’s organizers the best and that they would continue to evaluate EVO in the future. That decision, at least for now, appears to have been made.

“Nintendo has enjoyed interacting with fans at past Evo tournaments and wishes the show organizers the best of luck with their new project. We will continue to evaluate Evo and other opportunities, as we plan Super Smash Bros. tournament activity online and offline in the future.” A Nintendo spokesperson said in March 2021.

EVO 2022 is currently set to take place August 5-7 in Las Vegas.

So not only will 2022 be the first year without Super Smash Bros. content like 2021 Sora is the last DLC fighter released, but fans will also have to look elsewhere to watch the competitive Smash battles.
