Gemma Oaten has given her fans a health update – after being rushed to hospital on Saturday and admitting she feared death due to the pain.
The former soap star tested positive for Covid-19 last week and revealed she was experiencing “excruciating chest, stomach and back pain” throughout the week.
Describing the experience as “fuzzy and very surreal,” Gemma shared a snap from her hospital bed on Tuesday as she revealed her new medical diagnosis and how the past few days have been.
Sharing details of her condition, which “leads to kidney failure or worse, death,” the former Emmerdale actress also highlighted some of the cruel messages she’s received since her illness.
Her full Instagram explanation reads: “Hello everyone. I’m so sorry I was so quiet. I was inundated with messages and tried to keep up, as did my parents, but we hit a brick wall.
“I just thought it would be best to do an update for all you dear ones, so our phones cool down and we can get some rest at what is really a terrible time for all of us and my close family and friends.
The star continues, “So… I’ve been in the hospital since Saturday and things have deteriorated quickly. As many know I tested positive for Covid last Tuesday but woke up early on Saturday morning with chest, stomach and back pains I called 111 for advice and they sent an ambulance and everything was blurry and very surreal but also too real, if that makes sense?
“Long story short and I’ll explain more when I’m ready and fully fit, but I have been diagnosed with milk-alkaline syndrome which in rare and severe cases (like mine) leads to kidney failure or worse, death .
“Yep. All a bit much. thanks to @henriettamac for making me seek help and for pushing me to put myself first and for all her caring and @Joffpowell for bringing me clean knickers and all the magazines and puzzles a girl can dream of and for always being my rock. You both. You are awesome.
“And to the trolls (swipe through) for your messages… I don’t usually call out keyboard warriors, but there’s a lesson to be learned. I read these while wondering if I would make it through the night. Think before you type. Kindness means everything.”
Gemma begins to conclude: ‘On a lighter note. Thanks @ollielockeworld for sending this photo and making me laugh, insta filter dream.
“For now, I’m taking care of myself and resting, so please bear with it. This was a wake up call and I also need time to process it all.
“Stay healthy dears, thanks to all the amazing people in my life for the support. Especially mom and dad O and my family and real friends. I love you.
“Ps Greetings to the A&E staff at Charing Cross Hospital, Marjory Warren Ward. You are absolutely incredible. Thank you for looking after me and for your tireless work.
“*God it took me an hour to type Tata!*,” Gemma captioned after updating her 24,8000 followers of her condition.
Lots of fans rushed to wish Gemma well under her length update, writing: “Wishing you a speedy recovery! Thoughts are with you and sending lots of love.”
Gemma played Rachel Breckle on Emmerdale from 2011 and 2015 before moving on to another ITV soap, Coronation Street.
The actress made a cameo on The Cobblestones in November 2021 as Isla Haywood, a potential love interest for Tyrone Dobbs and mother of Hope Stapes classmate Darcy.
