Former Empire star Jussie Smollett was sentenced in Chicago today and was told he faces three years in prison after being found guilty on five of six counts against him.
Jussie Smollett has been jailed for 150 days after being found guilty of staging a fake hate crime.
The actor told the court “I didn’t commit suicide” after his sentence was delivered and protested his innocence.
He repeatedly told the court that he “did not commit suicide” and that if anything happened to him in prison it was not his fault.
He was sentenced to 150 days in Cook County Jail, and 30 months of felony probation, ordered to pay $120,106 and fined $25,000.

He also said he worries that those who first respond to a hate crime might actually feel suspicious because of the case.
The judge also said Smollett had committed perjury “for hours” by taking a stand and “lie” about what had happened.
The 39-year-old actor, who also stars in The Mighty Ducks, was released from custody after the sentence was handed down last December and arrived in court today for sentencing.
He has maintained his chastity the whole time.
During the trial, he asserted that he had not staged the events himself and insisted that he did not hire brothers Abel and Bola Osundairo to stage the onslaught.
Last month, Smollett filed documents requesting a new trial, claiming that his defense team had not been allowed to participate in the jury selection process.
He also asked a judge to overturn the sentence and declare him not guilty on six counts of disorderly conduct.
He also has an ongoing civil lawsuit over the matter, with the City of Chicago suing him for forfeiting resources in investigating his claim.
It all started in January 2019 when Smollett claimed that he was attacked by two white men who punched him, threw a noose around his neck, and poured chemicals on him. and hurled homophobic and racist slurs at him while shouting “This is MAGA country!”
Smollett reported the alleged crime, greeting officers at his home with a rope still loosely wrapped around his neck.
Police became suspicious of Smollett’s story and eventually claimed the actor made up the whole thing.
The actor was initially charged with 16 counts, which were later dismissed. His only penalty was forfeiture of his $10,000 bond.
But after backlash from the public, a special prosecutor was appointed and Smollett was eventually charged with six counts and went to trial.
During the trial, the Osundairo brothers, who are black, claimed that the actor had paid them as part of a conspiracy.
