Former Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson has revealed he took so many long-range shots on some advice from club legend Sir Bobby Charlton.

Gibson played for United from 2005 to 2012 and contributed 10 goals and eight assists in 59 games in all competitions. During his time under Sir Alex Ferguson, he helped the club win the Premier League and two League Cups before joining Everton.

The Republic of Ireland international was known for his penchant for shooting from distance. His style of play resulted in some memorable strikes, including a goal against Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2010 and a last-day game against Hull in 2009.

Speaking of UTD Podcast , Gibson says his style was encouraged by Charlton but led to some playful banter from his teammates. “I can’t remember what game it was, but Sir Bobby used to come into the dressing room after games,” he explained.

“I just remember him saying to me, ‘Listen son, they don’t remember the ones you miss. Just keep shooting.” It kind of stuck with me, so I just figured I’ll just shoot from anywhere! I shoot at every opportunity. But it worked. A few of them flew in for me.”

When asked if his teammates used to get annoyed with his continuous shooting, he replied, “There’s been a couple of times . It could have been after an away game at West Ham when I scored again. I had about 10 shots in the game and after that I got on the bus and Giggsy said, ‘Here he is, Darren Lampard.’ Got a bit of stick from the guys but [it worked for me].”

After leaving Old Trafford in 2012, Gibson played for Everton, Sunderland, Wigan and Salford City. However, his favorite goal remains for United in the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Bayern Munich in April 2010.

It came after just three minutes when Gibson reversed a dismissal from Wayne Rooney before clipping a low shot from 25 yards past goalkeeper Hans-Jorg Butt. United won the game 3-2 but were eliminated from the competition on away goals after a 4-4 draw.

“It’s probably not the best goal, but my favorite goal was Bayern Munich’s,” said Gibson. “Obviously I think I shot early and he didn’t move, the goalkeeper. and the fans, I remember it was incredible. I think that was the best, just the whole experience. I know we went out, but personally I think that was my best goal.”
