Research shows that over 12 months, people who have had Covid are more likely to develop mental health problems such as depression and anxiety, as well as trouble sleeping and substance abuse.
The data doesn’t stop there. Not only are mental health problems more likely to occur in people who already have the virus, but it’s also likely that people need medication to support their mental health one year after contracting the virus. .
What are the symptoms of Long Covid?
Research shows that the positive part Covid has a 35% higher rate of anxiety and a 39% higher rate of depression.
As well as this, other conditions were also detected, albeit in small quantities. The Covid group was found to have 2.4% more people struggling with their sleep and 0.4% more demonstrating substance abuse problems.
The Huffington Post reported that the results were found to be stronger in people who were hospitalized with the virus, although they were still present among those who did not.
Speaking to the newspaper, the president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Dr Adrian James, said: “Many people face an uphill battle to rebuild their lives.
