Explained: Welfare payment dates over Christmas

With Christmas fast approaching, people on welfare have been urged to look into when they can collect their payments in the coming weeks.

The Department for Social Protection said if you receive a welfare payment “the date you receive your payment may change over the Christmas and New Year period”.

Details of all payment arrangements for the holiday season are set out below.

Weekly Payments

Those on weekly welfare will receive the payment as usual in the week beginning Monday 19 December. You will also receive an advance payment for the following week. The department said this applies to payments made at post offices, by check or directly into an individual’s bank account.

The planned Christmas payment is as follows:

Due Date Payment will be made on
December 19, 20, 21, 2022 No change
December 22, 2022 December 21, 2022
December 23, 2022 December 22, 2022
January 2, 2023 December 30, 2022

Weekly payments will be paid on normal dates beginning January 3, 2023.

December Impact on declarations by part-time jobseekers

The change in social assistance payment dates also affects part-time, casual or short-time workers over the Christmas and New Year period. The department said to ensure payments are issued on time this month, recipients should “follow the guidelines on MyWelfare.ie for correctly submitting your work samples”.

Opening times at Christmas and New Year’s Eve

Welfare recipients have also been reminded that all department offices, including Intreo centers and field offices, will be closed on Monday and Tuesday 26th and 27th December and Monday 2nd January.

Christmas bonus

The state began processing this year’s welfare holiday payouts earlier this week, December 5.

The Christmas bonus 2022 is 100% of the normal maternity allowance, including the increase in the supplement for single people and the over-80s. The bonus does not include the fuel flat rate and the minimum payment is €20.

For example, if a recipient receives a jobseeker payment of €203 per week, they will receive a double payment of €406.
