Teenage tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz earned the plaudits of fans on Saturday after a superb athletic performance during their Miami Open clash with Hubert Hurkacz. Alcaraz – dubbed “the new Nadal” – produced another remarkable performance in Miami to defeat Hurkacz 7-6, 7-6 in their semi-final on Saturday.

His straight-set win means the Spaniard will now face Norway’s Casper Ruud to become champions on Sunday. Alcaraz was not only lauded for another fine performance against Hurkacz, but also earned the respect of the fans for allowing a point to be replayed after the referee wrongly declared the 18-year-old a winner.

Alcaraz played a drop shot in the opening set and although Hurkacz got the ball in time, the referee believed the ball had bounced twice and gave the youngster the point – who would have had a slight overhead anyway had made the wrong decision been made.

Hurkacz was visibly unhappy with the decision and was quick to complain to the referee when he was under him at the net. Alcaraz agreed with his opponent and demanded a replay of the point.

The gesture was remarkably received by the Miami crowd, who stood to applaud the Spaniard’s gesture, and this was then echoed by his Polish competitor. Sportswriter Tim Reynolds took to social media to praise Alcaraz, tweeting: “Alcaraz just gave up a point he ‘won’ – for 40-0, 5-6 in the first set – because of a bad call against Hurkacz went. Extreme class.”

Another tennis fan – @boyet_Uy – shared the same sentiment, adding: “I can’t say enough about this gesture as I’m not sure any other player will do this and just leave it to the referee. Bravo @alcarazcarlos03 for being gracious and honest with your opponent, although you are not obligated to be.”
