F1 News: The Russian Grand Prix will not be replaced in the 2022 calendar after the Sochi deal was ended amid the invasion

The 2022 Formula One season will be shortened to 22 races after the sport said today it would not replace the canceled September 25 Russian Grand Prix despite interest from other countries.

Ormula One had set a record 23 laps that year, but the Sochi race was canceled in February and the contract was canceled in early March following the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

The sport had said it would fill the pitch with a variety of options, including Qatar and Turkey and a second race in Singapore, but there will now be an additional break ahead of the double-header between Singapore and Japan.

Another race in Europe was seen as too much of a logistical challenge, while temperatures in Qatar – which returns to the calendar next year under a 10-year deal – raised concerns.

Formula 1 also had to weigh the commercial value of a 23rd race against the additional costs imposed on everyone involved as teams were already struggling with inflationary pressures and more expensive hotels and flights.

The decision not to add a replacement was announced on the official website www.formula1.com.

This means there will be a two-week break between the 28th August – 11th September Belgium-Netherlands-Italy and Singapore-Japan triple-header Belgium-Netherlands-Italy on October 2nd and 9th.

Formula 1 is set to expand again next season, with a Las Vegas night race making its debut as the third round in the United States.
