Pierre Gasly has told Formula 1 to quash discussion of removing the Monaco Grand Prix from its calendar.
Historic racing on the streets of Monte Carlo is said to be under threat as F1 secures new street circuits with venues like Las Vegas and Miami which it is hoped will be cheaper for current cars than the cramped Monaco circuit.
Circuits need to show they have more than ‘pedigree’ to do future business with the sport, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has warned.
McLaren boss Zak Brown recently said: “I would much rather have Monaco than not… but as the sport is bigger than any single driver or team, I think it’s bigger than any single Grand Prix.”
But AlphaTauri driver Gasly has insisted F1 must stay with Monaco.
“It would be a bit of a shock if Monaco was taken off the calendar,” said the Frenchman.
“It’s probably the most legendary race in the world.
“Speaking to non-F1 fans, everyone had heard about Monaco for different reasons, whether it’s for racing, whether it’s for parties or all the action surrounding the Grand Prix. It’s a very iconic weekend.
“I think and I really hope that we will experience it as drivers because it’s probably the toughest track of the season, the most demanding and my favorite track.”
