Facebook announced new custom settings to help curate what specific content is shown on a user’s timeline.
Those using the social media platform can now take advantage of a ‘show less’ or ‘show more’ option. It allows users to select more curated content, either by pushing similar content through their timeline or eliminating them through a ranking score.
“Selecting Show More will temporarily increase the ranking score for this post and similar posts. If you select show less, you’ll temporarily lower its ranking score,” Facebook said in a press release on Wednesday.
Facebook is offering the new custom settings through an enhanced version of its artificial intelligence systems.
“By offering more ways to integrate direct feedback into feed ranking, we’re making our artificial intelligence systems smarter and more responsive,” added Facebook.
The move comes as Facebook and other social media platforms have come under criticism for spreading misinformation. From August 2020 to January 2021, news publishers known for spreading misinformation received six times as many likes, shares and engagements on Facebook as trusted sources, according to an upcoming study by researchers at New York University and Universite Grenoble Alpes in France.
Facebook is also updating its “Feed Preferences” setting to help users “customize how much content you see in the feed of friends and family, groups, Pages, and public figures you’re connected with.”
Personalizing social media feeds is growing in popularity as algorithms become more advanced.
Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok all use algorithms to display posts and content specific to users based on what they are most engaged with. Facebook’s update will further adjust these algorithms.
