Families “flee to safety” after a mass brawl broke out at a restaurant during a Mother’s Day meal.
Cheshire Police descended on the restaurant yesterday after a fight broke out around 6.30pm at the Istanbul Grill in Culcheth, near Leigh.
Onlookers reported witnessing arguments, shouting and swearing before glasses were “thrown and smashed” at the restaurant. Families were forced to run into the streets with their crying little ones during the “scary” ordeal.
A large police presence was pictured outside the Turkish restaurant as people stood and watched from the street – but most of those involved had fled the scene by the time officers arrived.
Guests said the venue is packed with families, including children and toddlers.
A pregnant woman, who wished to remain anonymous, told that Manchester evening news that a large group had started arguing with the waiters before glasses were thrown and smashed. She said: “There was a large group of about 20 or 30 in the restaurant when a fight broke out.
“People ran screaming and screaming for the exit and glasses were smashed. Two boys ran out of the back of the restaurant laughing, picking up glasses and throwing them, saying ‘come on’.
“My partner, I and my daughter ran to the exit. I’m four months pregnant and there were also a lot of children and a few small toddlers and babies. Everyone screamed and cried, it was terrible.
“It was very messy and crazy and nobody knew what to do. The group of men kicked the glass in front of the restaurant and ran back, shouting ‘come on’, ‘fight us’, along with much slurred speech.
“We left after the police arrived around 7:15pm and luckily managed to get a table at another restaurant. Culcheth is a nice place and Istanbul is a great restaurant. I’m really sad about tonight as it’s a day for mothers, not for people who spoil it. It was really scary. “
The investigation is ongoing and witnesses are being urged to contact Cheshire Police with information about the incident.
A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: “Police were called at around 6.45pm on Sunday 27 March to reports of an altercation at a restaurant in Warrington Road, Culcheth. Officers attended and found that most of those involved had fled the scene.
“The investigation into the incident is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to visit www.cheshire.police.uk/tell-usor call 101 and quote IML 1232219.”
Istanbul Grill declined to comment.
