Family “overwhelmed” by support for girl, 17, who was hit by car on bike home from school

A Waterford-based family said they were “overwhelmed” by the support for their 17-year-old daughter, who now needs comprehensive jaw reconstruction including bone grafts, after she was hit by a car while cycling home from school.

The family of Adrija Sipaya, 17, thanked the emergency services who helped the teenager at the scene of the accident in Dungarvan on May 26 before she was flown to Cork University Hospital (CUH) in critical condition.

A fundraiser to fund a special jaw surgery for Adrija has raised €12,000 of their €40,000 goal – with several big donations over Christmas.

The teenager’s medical bills are already over €10,000 and her family is now hoping she can have specialized jaw reconstruction surgery from a world-renowned surgeon in Lithuania.

Her treatment in Ireland was partially covered by insurance.

Adrija’s father Julius said they were very grateful for all the support the family had received but hoped they could now raise the funding for his daughter’s special operations abroad.

“We have found a doctor in Lithuania (who) is a leading doctor in Europe (for such operations),” he said.

“Here there is no such (specialist) doctor who can help us.”

The damage to Adrija’s face and jaw was so severe that she may need two more years of surgery on her jaw, teeth and gums.

The family has already taken the teenager for several trips to Lithuania for examination and treatment.

Her father said the jaw surgery was crucial in helping his daughter lead a normal life.

“The jaw surgery is important. (She) absolutely needs her. The bone transplant is also absolutely necessary.”

To repair Adrija’s shattered jaw, a specialized surgeon will remove a piece of bone from her leg to allow for an extensive graft.

This will help replace a large piece of bone that is now missing in the teen’s jaw.

The damage to Adrija’s mouth in the collision was so extensive that she also needs surgery on her gums, which extend right through her mouth.

Adrija was knocked unconscious in the collision and has no memory of her accident.

“All we want is to help Adria smile again,” he said.

Julius sped to the scene of the accident within minutes of the collision, horrified at his daughter’s injuries.

Adrija lost six teeth, part of her upper jaw was shattered, her lower jaw was broken, she had a broken collarbone and nerve damage throughout her mouth.

Julius commended the emergency services, ambulance pilot and CUH doctors for helping save his daughter’s life.

While Adrija avoided critical brain and spinal injuries, the injuries to her face and jaw were so severe that she will likely have to remain on a liquid diet for two years.
