The launch of a Cruise ship is a huge event for any cruise line – and choosing the right cruise ship sponsor is an important part of the process.
It is a long-standing tradition that a cruise ship has a godmother to bring good luck and protection to the ship and in recent decades famous faces have been honored with the title.
In fact, the Queen, Duchess of Cambridge and Oprah are some of the iconic women who have accepted the role.
So what exactly does a cruise ship sponsor do? The main responsibility is to appear at the christening of the ship, where the godmother will officially name the ship. This usually involved breaking a bottle of champagne on the hull (although these days the sheer size of ships means this often involves pressing a button to start the bottle).

Showing off her unmatched elegance, the Duchess donned a dalmatian print coat by Hobbs and a black bow tie by designer Jane Taylor for the occasion.

This isn’t her first foray into the world of travel – back in 2018, the TV presenter teamed up with the travel agency when she organized a ‘Girls Vacation Cruise’ complete with her life talks, yoga sessions, and wellness classes.
During the christening, she spoke of her experience on that cruise, saying: “It’s been an incredible experience to see people from all over the world come together with one mind and honor yourself, honor yourself, and honor each other. People gather, make friends, and connect with people they don’t know because they feel like they’ve met themselves on some level. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Mariah Carey became the fairy godmother of Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Fantasy ship in 2012. The naming ceremony was a glitzy event on New York’s Hudson River, featuring appearances from other celebrities like Jerry Seinfeld and Neil Patrick Harris.
