Famous historical epic with great action and even better characters [TIFF]

Within the palace walls at Dahomey, the women of Agojie lived fiercely and freely. Others of the kingdom thought of them almost mythical; sentient beings are infinite and must not be looked at. But as Nanisca says, there is an evil growing outside the walls of the palace. The slave trade – which even King Ghezo was involved in – was a joke in Nanisca’s eyes, even though it made Dahomey very rich. Then there are the gunfighters of the Oyo Empire, played by a ruthless slave trader, played by Jimmy Odukoya with real menace. Nanisca warns of both the threat of the Oyo Empire and the evils of the slave trade, but her King is hesitant to change his old familiar ways.

Amid all this happening to Nawi (Soo Mbedu), a 19-year-old is assigned to Agojie after she refuses to marry a man who freely beats her. Nawi is stubborn and brave, and she becomes our true protagonist, guiding us through the world of Agojie. To become one of them, Nawi – along with several other rookies – must undergo a rigorous training camp-style program, and this makes up the majority of “The Woman King.” We watch as Nawi grows into a true warrior, while making sure Nanisca isn’t satisfied with how strong she is.

Nawi is brought in under the command of soldier Agojie Izogie, who guides her step-by-step and the doll gives little advice. Izogie is played by Lashana Lynch, and in a cast full of big names, Lynch is the real standout, turning Izogie into a comedic, warm yet deadly presence who loves to drink whiskey and sharpen fingernails into claws. Every second she’s on screen is a treat, and I want more. The friendship that forms between Nawi and Izogie is amazing, and Mbdeu delivers a groundbreaking effect in the process, keeping us deeply interested in Nawi and her story.
