Dave Grohl invited fans to “take some time in the musical mind” of Taylor Hawkins, as he opened a special tribute concert to the late Foo Fighters drummer.

His event at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles was Hawkins’ second celebration since the 50-year-old drummer was found dead in his Colombian hotel room in March.

Second to perform was US musician Joan Jett, who took the stage to play some songs with the Foo Fighters, along with Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker.

Hawkins’ 16-year-old son Oliver Shane later introduced his father’s classic cover rock band, Chevy Metal, telling fans at the arena that “I’m really nervous.”

The band featured Kesha on stage and performed David Bowie’s Heroes.

Other performers expected throughout the night include Miley Cyrus, Mark Ronson, Def Leppard, Wolfgang Van Halen, Pink, and Hawkin’s old friend Alanis Morissette.

Funds from concert tickets and merchandise sales will go to the charities Music Support and MusiCares, selected by the Hawkins family, who helped organize the event.

Hawkins has played in a band led by former Nirvana drummer Grohl for more than two decades, along with Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett and Rami Jaffee.

He joined the Foo Fighters in 1997 after a previous tour with Morissette. Hawkins also starred with the band in their recently released film, Studio 666.

Following his death in March, the band canceled all upcoming tour dates as well as a scheduled performance at the Grammys.
