Fantastic Beasts actor Kevin Guthrie has been released from prison after he won an appeal to reduce his sexual assault prison term from three years to two years.

Senior judges agreed his former good personality and the ‘devastating’ impact on his career should be taken into account by the sheriff.

The 34-year-old star was jailed last May after groping a woman at a Glasgow flat in September 2017.

Glasgow Sheriff’s Court was told that the assault took place at a property owned by actor Scott Reid.

Meanwhile, Guthrie has maintained her innocence and denies any wrongdoing. He insists he was only ‘helping’ the woman after she fell ill.

A 4-day trial took place and the actor, who starred in the Netflix series The English Game, was found guilty and placed on the sex offender registry indefinitely.

Attorney Ian Duguid QC successfully asserted that Guthrie’s three-year sentence was too long, which magistrates Lord Carloway, Lord Pentland and Lord Matthews agreed.

Guthrie was released immediately because he had served the equivalent of a two-year term.

Judges believe he has a low risk of recidivism.

Kevin denied the sexual assault allegations but his DNA was found inside her panties.

The attack happened between September 30 and October 1, 2017.

The woman recounted Scott’s absence from the room and then the sheets were “transferred” to her body.

The judges said the sentence would have a ‘devastating impact’ on his career

And now, after the judges have agreed to reduce his sentence, Lord Carloway said: “Although the appellant recognized that a detention sentence was appropriate, the sheriff charged insufficient weight. for the appellant’s previous exemplary character, his charity, his work, and the devastating impact the trust would have on his career.

“The court agreed to that submission. The crime committed was a serious crime. It was an unexplainable crime based on the appellant’s background.

“Most importantly, the appellant’s confidence will likely end, at least in the near future, the successful career he has worked so hard to achieve.

“In these cases, the court will rescind the three-year sentence and replace one of the two years in prison.”
