Fast fashion fallout: “I was led by trends and had a wardrobe of really shoddy clothes that made me feel like I had nothing to wear.”

As a society, we are becoming increasingly aware of the detrimental impact of fast fashion on our planet. As we are bombarded with social media ads and discount codes on a daily basis, our desire for a good deal wanes. The way we shop is changing, and with good reason. According to the UN Alliance for Sustainable Fashion, the fashion industry was responsible for 8-10 percent of global CO2 emissions in 2019. That’s more than all international flights and shipping combined this year.

Today, more than 225,000 tonnes of textile waste are discarded here in Ireland every year. Recycling these materials would reduce direct greenhouse gas emissions by more than 300,000 tons per year. That’s the equivalent of removing almost 50,000 cars from the road.
