Father guilty after allowing his teenage daughter to become morbidly obese before her death

A father accused of killing his disabled daughter by allowing her to become morbidly obese has been found guilty of manslaughter.

Lun Titford admitted he heard his 16-year-old daughter Kaylea scream the night before she died, adding that he abandoned her because he was “lazy”.

Testifying at his trial at Mold Crown Court, 45-year-old Titford said he didn’t think there was anything unusual about the screams from Kaylea’s downstairs bedroom in Powys, Wales, on October 9, 2020.

The jury heard that shortly after 10:30 p.m. that evening, he texted 16-year-old Kaylea from his upstairs bedroom, asking her to be quiet. “If you have a bad chest, stop screaming,” he texted her, and then, “Why do you keep screaming [screeching]?”

He said Kaylea has a cold and he assumes it’s “like it always does — someone was in her room that she didn’t want, or someone was doing something she didn’t like.”

Disabled 16-year-old Kaylea Titford weighed 22 stone and 13 pounds and had a body mass index of 70 when she died in October 2020 at her home in Newtown, Powys, Wales, where the jury heard maggots were found under her Wound-covered corpse when found in “truly appalling circumstances.”

Titford accepted that he was breaching his duty as a parent and not keeping her clean, making sure she moved, keeping her bedroom clean, or getting her medical attention when she needed it.

Caroline Rees KC, Prosecutor, said: “Why did you let your daughter down so badly?”

Titford, 45, replied: “I’m lazy.”

When asked if he “just didn’t feel like it anymore,” the mover replied, “Yes, that’s right.”
