Felipe Contepomi poured cold water when talking about Argentina’s move

Leinster coach Felipe Contepomi poured cold water on the suggestion he would return to his homeland to take up the Argentina job.

While Contepomi revealed While he has not had any official communication from the Argentine league, he admits that he would be open to discussing any head coach opportunities that may arise.

The 44-year-old, who has 87 caps for Pumas, has one more year left on his current Leinster contract, with Contepomi making clear he’s happy in Dublin.

Argentina is currently looking for a new boss after Mario Ledesma left his position in early February.

The Pumas family have been particularly affected by the pandemic and with the World Cup only 18 months away, they are in a race to get their home.

It remains to be seen whether Argentina will make a formal approach to their legendary former player, who was a key part of the Leinster defenders team.

“I can’t say much, from the union, no one contacted me,” Contepomi said.

“I think it comes more from a rumour. According to what I read in the news, I have not heard any union official openly, I have as much information as you.

“I think it’s more speculative because they named professional Argentinian coaches, not a lot of them, so that’s how they get them excited (story). But there is nothing obvious that I know.”

When asked if the job in Argentina appealed to him, Contepomi said: “Look, obviously international rugby is the pinnacle for coaching work. But with that said, I’ve always said in this profession, it’s very, very, very difficult to draw a path.

“If even (Lionel) Messi, the best player ever, couldn’t even decide his future, imagine it happening to us! I am really happy here. I have one more year left on my contract. I’m happy, I think I’m lucky to be in an environment that many people want.

“I am just focusing on the present. It’s something we always ask the players to do, so if we ask them to do it, we have to do it ourselves. It’s part of my job, I’m really happy here.”

Contepomi added that he has aspirations to become a head coach one day.

“If there is an opportunity to be a head coach or something else, I will definitely take it into account and discuss it. It’s always very open here (in Leinster) and that’s a good thing. ”
