FIFA 23 brings major upgrades to the matchday experience

EA Sports just announced all of the visual and audio upgrades it’s making in FIFA 23 to improve our matchday experience.

From realistic turf to stadium chants, here are all the changes made to give us the most realistic FIFA game yet.

The grass is always greener

Among the changes is a new hyper-realistic grass system that gives us a more believable playing field than ever before.

All these small pitch changes add up to big visual upgrades for the latest FIFA game.

We were fortunate enough to attend EA’s Producer Showcase in Vancouver last month, and Senior Art Director Fab Muoio was thrilled to tell us about the new look for the pitch.

Players no longer have to run around a flat, lifeless green carpet.

As of FIFA 23, the playing field will consist of moving blades of grass that decompose when you trample them.

Previously, the appearance of the grass was only based on how you adjusted a slider in the settings.

The new system shows how the pitch degrades over time, just like a real game.

While it may seem insignificant, with every game released, EA hopes that the game will look and feel more realistic.

You can see the boost it adds to gameplay in our hands-on FIFA 23 preview, where we talk about the satisfaction of slipping tackles and breaking through a churning streak.

The field isn’t the only part of the game that has seen major improvements.

The crowd has been brought to life and they look better than ever.

It’s still not the same as entering a real football stadium.

However, spectators now react in sync to the biggest moments on the pitch, and their claps land at just the right moment.

Most impressively, the celebrations in Poznań have been upgraded so that the crowds stand up, turn around, put their arms around each other’s shoulders and jump up and down.

This was added in FIFA 15 but was rarely seen as viewers were almost never properly synced.

The latest upgrades mean those celebrations that require large groups of people can be done in style.

back of the net

Did you know that in FIFA 22 the goal nets were still rendered in 2D?

For the first time in the series, the last 2D element is gone, and you can score goals in a net with some depth.

And those goals are shown to you from a better vantage point than ever before.

Augmented reality overlays have been enabled for the first time, and replay intelligence decides which angle is best for seeing your targets.

You can now see your game stats and distance to give you more real-time feedback on your performance.

Free kicks have also been redesigned so you can see expected goals, distance and improved player profiles when choosing who to take the shot.

Along with all of these improvements, a pre-match sizzle reel with commentary from Derek Rae and Alex Scott will be shown before big matches.

While the FIFA soundtrack has always been a blast, FIFA 23 lets you create your own.

By uploading EA Trak into the game, you can choose the music you listen to.

You can even turn off the commentary if you just want to relax and unwind.

While Alex Scott joins the commentary team, Stewart Robson will still be there to tell you all about the game.

The crowd also has more to shout about as over 500 new chants have been added to their repertoire.

All ball sound effects have been re-recorded with better quality, and those playing on PS5 can hear them straight from the controller.

FIFA 23 will be released on September 30th, but those who purchase the Ultimate Edition will get access three days early on September 27th.
