FIFA 23 is now available for Ultimate Edition players and it will be the last time EA Sports will develop a football game under that name.
Starting next year, the same group of developers will work under the new title EA Sports FC.
While the licensing deal is in place, EA Sports claims that not much will change between the two series.
We spoke to FIFA 23 Executive Gameplay Producer Sam Koralev about what the differences will be next year.
In terms of affection for the game, he claims the team is just as excited to be working on a new IP as it was to be working under the FIFA brand.
He says: “I’m really looking forward to FIFA 23 because it’s the most complete FIFA game we’ve ever made.
“I can only guarantee that as a development team we will put the same passion and heart into EA Sports FC 24.”
When asked what changes or innovations there would be in the upcoming series, Koralev was more reticent.
It seems that despite the big name change, the game will continue to build on the FIFA games.
He claims: “I can say that every year starts with a lot of creative ideas and we have a very talented team that is always striving to find the best next steps to further improve the gameplay and game modes.
“I know we come up with additional things on the gameplay side every year, but we’re not redefining the game.”
From what he describes, the new game will build on the established games, with the yearly upgrades we’re used to.
Koralev explains: “I feel like we have a very solid foundation year after year.
“And every year, even this year’s features, they don’t destroy the foundation and something we’ve built in the past – they keep improving it or giving you additional tools.”
“It doesn’t mean we have to change anything about our foundation – I think our foundation is strong.
“The number of players enjoying the game year over year is a strong indicator of that in my opinion.”
He sets the example of how the team has added the new power shot this year while keeping all the old scoring opportunities.
With the separation of FIFA and EA Sports, the Football Association wants to continue the FIFA series with a new development team.
Koralev doesn’t seem worried about the competition. He believes it’s the game that people buy FIFA for, not the name.
He says: “I’m always confident about our future because it’s all about the team, the passionate hearts that we have in our team.
“Each feature has a trio of engineers, animators, and designers working together, and that brings different perspectives on the technical side, on the visual side, and on the design side.
“So I’m definitely confident about the future and I’m excited.”
