The final figure skating competition of the Beijing Olympics is underway, as 18 pairs skate in the short program, a two-minute skating event.
Not like ice dancing Prior to the Olympics, figure skating pairs prioritized acrobatic skills: jumping, lifting, and throwing.
Friday’s competition includes performances by rival pair Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov of Russia, the defending world champions, and Sui Wenjing and Han Cong of China, who won the world championships in 2017 and 2019.
Sui and Han are especially eager to be redeemed. They had gold within their reach at the 2018 Olympics, but lost only 0.43 points to Germany.
Pairs will skate the long show, also known as free skating, on Saturdays. The medal winner will be determined by adding up the points of the two events.
