Film director praises Ukraine’s president for ‘persistence, cuteness’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been hailed as “easily persevering” with “resoluteness”, as “an example of the Ukrainian people” by a director who has worked on 10 films with the leader.

Before being elected president in 2019, he was better known in the entertainment world as a comedian and television satirist.

The show began to be broadcast in 2015 on Ukrainian channel 1 + 1 and became extremely popular, attracting the attention of three series and one feature film.

After the show impressed the Ukrainian public, Mr. Zelensky ran for and won a majority in the 2019 presidential election.

American film director David Dodson, who has directed a series with him, told BBC Breakfast: “He’s such a nice guy. He’s someone who always makes you feel trusted, like you’re about to do your best work, and he believes in you to deliver that.

“I started editing his films and I ended up directing him in three films and he always made me feel like I was Spielberg, he would come on set and look at you and you feel complete. entirely possible.

“So it’s not surprising that he’s alive again at this point, at least not to me.”

He added: “Whatever we see on the courageous path, whatever we see on the resilient and resolute path is really just a reflection of the Ukrainian people.

“My experience in Ukraine, and I’ve been married to a Ukrainian woman for 12 years that I met on a Zelensky movie in Kyiv, that’s who they are.

“So it’s not surprising to see Volodymyr behaving this way, because in my experience that’s the heart of the Ukrainian people.”

Asked if he was aware of Mr Zelensky’s political aspirations, Dodson said: “It was never discussed. In the last movie we did together in 2018, he’s actively planning his campaign, it’s an open secret, but he’s never talked about it and he really doesn’t. encourage anyone to talk about it.

“It’s not something he wants people to know anything about, so it’s very separate – his work life and home life and then whatever happens.

“We all knew he was going to announce his candidacy but it was a completely taboo subject on set and in the office.”

Mr. Zelensky also voiced Paddington Bear in the Ukrainian dub of the 2014 and 2017 films, and won the country’s version of Dancing With The Stars in 2006. Film director praises Ukraine’s president for ‘persistence, cuteness’
