Film Review: Eleven Days in May

With most of the world’s attention distracted by the pandemic last May, the people of Gaza have endured the “bloody escalation of hostilities” since 2014, Tim Robey said in The Daily Telegraph. This “desperately harrowing” documentary directed by Brit Michael Winterbottom (The Journey, Greed) and Palestinian filmmaker Mohammed Sawwaf focuses on the children killed: as many as 60 children lost their lives in just 11 days; The total death toll was at least 243, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. In some cases, entire families were “virtually wiped out” in a single airstrike, “with only one case leaving a pair of grandparents behind.” In other cases, shrapnel took away “a single eldest brother or youngest sister, an unborn baby.” The film “does not rage and scold” but is a “litany of losses, heavily accompanied by Max Richter’s liturgical music”. There is “no way to see it unmoved”.

The film’s approach is “direct and unvarnished,” Wendy Ide said in The Observer: A tale by Kate Winslet lists the dead, then the details of their lives are outlined – ‘a two-year-old who loved cats; an aspiring astronaut”. Survivors are “gathered to pay tribute; empty beds filmed; Possessions collected in makeshift shrines”. The film also includes corpse footage of children who were “torn to pieces,” Kevin Maher said The times. “It’s an 18 certified horror show but culled from real life. It’s inflammatory material and fiercely anti-Israel.” Viewers are offered “no context” and the film contains “no nuance – just the insinuation that “Israel” (whoever that is) is a murderous maniac. Which doesn’t seem very constructive given global events at the moment.” Film Review: Eleven Days in May
