Film review of Downton Abbey: A New Era

I’ve always had “a bit of a soft spot” for downton, said Deborah Ross in The Spectator. Adjusting to a new offer is like putting on a pair of old slippers. But it also tested my patience A new erathe second Downton Movie spin-off. The year is 1928, and the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) has unexpectedly inherited a mansion from a French aristocrat with whom she was having an affair many moons ago. When a “troop of Downton residents” head off to the Riviera to inspect the property, Downton itself is ambushed by a film crew paying through the nose to use the building as a backdrop. All the usual Downton Ingredients show up – “a birth, a proposal, a death, a worry about paternity, a health hazard” – but there’s far too much explanation, and the writing style is often pathetic. “Old slippers? Sometimes they have to go.”

Yes, this film is “a bit silly,” Matthew Bond said in the Daily Mail, but it’s also “charming, well acted” and funny to boot. Keep believing during the “awkward start” and you’ll find that you’re watching a film that’s “huge fun” and quite poignant. “It’s obviously several leagues below what it was in 2001 Gosford Park‘Fellowes’ ‘original cottage film,’ said Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian. And yet “I have to admit, like someone holding an empty Pringles tube that was full ten minutes ago, that I found this film entertaining.” There is something captivating about the mixture of “dead serious melodrama and bizarre glass-eyed pathos”. Still, I hope this is the last time Downton Rate. If Fellowes insists on sticking it out, he might be able to revisit the family in the 1970s, when they were “relegated to misery by exorbitant but highly justified tax rates.”
