Filmmakers can stage protests against ‘divisive’ pre-taped Oscar categories

Members of the film industry could protest the “divisive” decision to pre-record several Oscar categories at this year’s awards.

Arol Urban, President of the Cinema Audio Society (CAS), said the move would “shatter the filmmaking community” by “keeping invisible art invisible”.

It was previously reported that eight categories including documentaries, film editing and make-up/hairstyling would be pre-recorded and included in the live broadcast.

The awards for the original score, production design, animated short, live-action short, and audio are also reportedly set to rotate early.

“It’s hurtful for some nominees in some categories, but beyond that it’s divisive,” Ms Urban told the PA news agency.

“It’s breaking up the filmmaking community because we’re all filmmakers.

“The Academy Awards is a magical night, and it’s a night when audiences really look and appreciate different aspects of filmmaking that are incredibly impactful but perhaps invisible to the viewer.

“It’s heartbreaking in that way and very damaging in that way.”

Ms Urban said it was “disturbing” to see the “stratification” of the Academy, an organization created to celebrate filmmaking “as a whole”, and would tell the public that “some categories are more important than others “.

“It’s not to the heart of the Oscars… and conveys a very hurtful message,” she told PA.

Oscar showrunner Will Packer previously said the show will “make sure everyone has their moment” and celebrate talented people and what they do.

Mr Packer said organizers “appreciate every last category, every last area” and that there were “misunderstandings” about the situation, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In response to his remarks, Ms Urban said, “It’s not her moment… it’s about being in the room with all the different aspects of filmmaking and all your peers and giving you equal recognition for your unseen contribution.

“They took it away by making it a pre-shoot and editing and pasting it, it’s not the same.”

Sunday’s ceremony is expected to feature acts of “solidarity” where guild members can wear their pins upside down and honorees can receive their trophies upside down.

“We think that decision turned this night on its head and I think you’ll see people reflecting on that,” Ms Urban said.
