Final Fantasy XIV Steam Starts Linking With Game Launch Issues

Following last month’s announcement that Square Enix would start allowing Steam account linking for Final Fantasy XIV players, patch 6.08 starts available Steam link today. While many people seem to be playing successfully, Square Enix has also responded to reports that the Steam version is causing bugs.

There was a response from the community reporting that some players received an error message when they tried to launch the Steam version, resulting in the game being unplayable. They acknowledge that they are currently investigating, but since many players can still launch the game and play through Steam, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact problem initially.

They are continuing to investigate the matter, but released a follow-up statement with additional information about their findings. Square Enix confirmed that the problem can be avoided if you just name your Steam profile to alphabetic characters. Special characters or even numbers can contribute, so for now they recommend that you name your Steam profile to simple letters and then try to launch the game as a temporary solution. . They will continue to work with Steam

If you take advantage of the Steam link and want to play the game, you won’t be able to launch it from anything other than Steam later on, so make sure you have that ready before linking.

Looks like they’re getting a better understanding of what’s behind the current bug and will continue to update the community on Steam launch issues. With a global community that may be using so many different characters in their profile names, it makes sense that they would continue to find workarounds to directly address the issue.
