Finely tuned myth and magic in the heart of the land of the Naas horses

Tonaphúca, Punchestown, Naas, County Kildare, €1.5m

Of all the ghosts, banshees and little green men that pollute Irish folklore, the Púca is arguably the most glorious. The shapeshifting sprite is represented in various ways as a pig, dog, rampaging bull, and most often as a wild bronco. This is particularly apt for Mullacash in the town of Kildare, near Punchestown, where the mythical creature lends its name to a country house that many will find overwhelmingly attractive.

Tonaphúca, which translates to “The Song of the Spirit,” is a 4,500 square foot detached home on nearly 8 acres. The property is surrounded by more than 6,500 mature trees and shrubs giving it a lush, rural setting. There is also an orchard, vegetable gardens, flowers and manicured lawns.

Medieval interior of Tonaphúca with vaulted ceiling

Tonaphúca was built in the early 2000s and underwent a major overhaul this year, making it a C1 BER. Each room is thermostatically controlled and there is underfloor heating throughout, along with a central vacuum cleaning system and electrically controlled skylights.

The main hallway is an impressive entrance with a Waterford crystal chandelier hanging from its 18 ft ceiling and a sweeping custom mahogany staircase. There are two spacious reception rooms, a Victorian room and a medieval room with a vaulted ceiling. Also on the ground floor are the kitchen/breakfast room, dining room, utility room, guest toilet, laundry room, gym and master bedroom with walk-in closet and bathroom.

Upstairs there are four further bedrooms (one ensuite), a bathroom and a study with stairs to an attic room. A separate two-storey extension offers a wide range of possible uses. Punchestown, Curragh and Naas racecourses are all within a 10 minute drive whilst Dublin is 40 minutes away via the M7. Tonaphúca is at Smyth Naas (045) 895 440.
