Finnish PM Sanna Marin denies using drugs after party video leaked

She has been dubbed “the coolest politician in the world” but Finland’s prime minister was forced to deny using illegal drugs after leaked videos of her dancing, drinking and singing at a loud party.

About 20 people attended the party, including artists, TV and radio presenters, an MP, a celebrity stylist and a social media influencer.

In the recordings, unidentified people can be heard yelling “flour,” which is a Finnish slang term for cocaine.

“I didn’t take any drugs. I didn’t consume anything but alcohol,” said Sanna Marin.

The 36-year-old, who has been seen in sleek leather jackets and at rock festivals, also denied using anyone else’s drugs.

“I have nothing to hide or hide, and I haven’t done anything illegal,” she added.

When asked if there should be a police investigation, she said: “I still don’t know anything illegal happened. Then it would hardly be a police matter.”

Last December, Ms Marin had to apologize after photos of her dancing in a Helsinki nightclub until 4am were published. She had stayed out until the early hours despite knowing she was exposed to Covid.

Ms Marin refused to say how much she drank at the last party, saying she didn’t calculate it exactly. She said the videos were taken a few weeks ago at a party held at two apartments and continued at two bars.

“Even there I sang, danced and hugged my friends and drank alcohol,” she said.

Her security detail is in the area but not in the apartments themselves, she told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting of her center-left party.

“These are private videos and not intended for the public,” she said, before saying she would continue to trust her friends despite the leak.

Karoliina Tuominen, a radio host who was at the party, also denied that anyone was using drugs. She said it was a shame the videos had been released and said there was nothing “strange” about a “good group” of adults having fun.

Mikko Karna, an MP for the Center Party, which is in a coalition with Ms Marin’s Social Democratic Party, suggested that the Prime Minister should undergo a voluntary drug test.

“Half Finland” suspected she was on narcotics because of the loud videos, he said.

Ms Marin said she had “no problem” taking a drug test because she hadn’t taken anything.

“I haven’t done drugs so it’s not a problem to take a drug test, but I also think it’s very special that it’s required. I haven’t seen any evidence that anything was used anywhere,” she said.

The leader of her party’s parliamentary group said it was up to Ms Marin whether she took the test and said she still had the parliamentary group’s trust.

Another still from the Sanna Marin party

Aleksi Valavuori, a sports TV presenter, said Ms Marin is not the right leader for a country in crisis. “She is by far the most incompetent Prime Minister we have ever had. I do not know. Please take your leather jacket and stand back,” he said.

During Germany picture Dubbed “the coolest politician in the world” in an article celebrating her stylish image, Ms Marin was recently criticized by the media in Sweden, who accused her of flattering celebrities.
