Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin: No drugs, just a lot of dancing at a ‘wild’ party

Finland’s prime minister said she didn’t take drugs during a “wild” party at a private home, adding she did nothing wrong as she let loose and partied with friends.

The video, posted on a social network, shows six people dancing in front of a camera and imitating a song, including Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin. Later in the video, Marin, 36, kneels on what appears to be a dance floor with her arms behind her head and dances while mimicking a song.

“I am disappointed that it has become public. I spent the evening with friends. Celebrated, pretty wild, yes. Dancing and singing,” she was quoted as saying by Finnish broadcaster YLE on Thursday.

“I have not used drugs or anything other than alcohol myself. I danced, sang and partied and did perfectly legal things. I’ve also never been in a situation where I knew other people would do it that way,” Marin said, according to Hufvudstadsbladet newspaper.

It was unclear when the party, which was reportedly attended by Ilmari Nurminen, a member of Eduskunta, or Parliament, for Marin’s Social Democratic Party, and Finnish singer Alma, took place.

Marin – who became Finland’s youngest-ever prime minister in December 2019 – said she spends her free time with friends like others her age and intends to continue being the same person as before.

“I hope that will be accepted. We live in a democracy and in elections everyone can decide these issues,” she said, according to YLE.

Critics have pointed out that Finland, which shares a 1,340-kilometer land border with Russia, faces high electricity prices, in part because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The country recently abandoned its long-standing neutral stance and applied to join NATO.

In July, Marin attended a popular Finnish rock festival. In December, she issued a public apology after going out into clubs until 4am without her work phone and was therefore not informed that she was in close contact with a Covid-19 positive person.
