Fiona Hill accuses Putin of using Elon Musk to help Russia push Ukraine agenda

Former White House adviser Fiona Hill believes Russian President Vladimir Putin is using Elon Musk and other prominent figures to help Russia with its agenda in Ukraine.

Hill, who specialized in Russian and European affairs for the Trump administration and testified during the first impeachment trial against the former president, spoke to Politico about Putin’s determination to press ahead with Russia’s war on Ukraine despite numerous setbacks.

Hill claimed that Putin “can’t afford to look like a loser” and will do whatever it takes to win the war in Ukraine.

She believes the Russian president is using Tesla and SpaceX CEOs to ease tensions and encourage settlement talks.

Noting that Musk had previously referred to Crimea as Russian territory, Hill suggested negotiating Ukraine’s Kherson and Zaporizhia regions to ensure Crimea’s water supply.

“He made this proposal before Putin’s September 30 annexation of these two territories. It was a very specific clue,” Hill said.

Hill noted that Kherson and Zaporizhia control the water supply of Crimea, an arid peninsula. The area has aquifers but no rivers, making it dependent on the Dnipro River, which flows through a channel from Kherson.

“It’s unlikely that Elon Musk himself knows about it. The reference to water is so specific that this is clearly a message from Putin,” Hill said.

Hill said Putin often uses prominent figures to “fundamentally test how people are going to react to ideas.”

Hill suggested that Musk, who has a large following on social media, was an ideal candidate to relay messages for Putin.

“He has built a long-standing reputation in Russia through Tesla, SpaceX’s space programs and also through Starlink. He’s one of the most popular men in opinion polls in Russia,” Hill said.

“At the same time, he has played a very important role in supporting Ukraine by providing Starlink internet systems to Ukraine and keeping Ukraine’s telecoms running, partly paid for by the US government. Elon Musk has enormous influence and incredible notoriety. “

Hill added: “Putin plays the egos of great men, makes them feel like they have a role to play. But in reality they are just direct transmitters of messages from Vladimir Putin.”

Putin’s methods allow him to skip the diplomatic process and persuade the Americans to end their involvement in Ukraine, Hill said.

“He wants to set his terms and see how many people are going to pick them up. All of this is an attempt to get the Americans to pull out of the war and hand over Ukraine and Ukrainian territory to Russia,” she said.

Hill’s comments come after Musk promised to continue funding Starlink satellite internet terminals for the Ukrainian government amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“To hell with that…even though Starlink is still losing money and other companies are getting billions in taxpayers’ money, we’re just going to keep funding the Ukrainian government for free,” Musk tweeted over the weekend.

In a letter to the Pentagon, SpaceX allegedly claimed that deploying Starlink satellites in Ukraine could cost nearly $400 million next year.
