Emergency services were dealing with a large fire that sent smoke billowing into the sky south of Manchester and residents said they heard a “loud bang”.

Fire crews were called to Roundthorn Industrial Park, in Wythenshawe, shortly before 9.30pm.

Flames can be seen rising from an industrial unit, reports Manchester Evening News.

They blew from the scene on Tilson Road in the direction of Wythenshawe Hospital and residents in the area were told to stay indoors due to the smoke.

Video from the area shows a burning well with smoke billowing.

Fire authorities initially said five engines were at the scene of the fire, which began around 9:20 p.m. Friday, but another five also arrived to help with the problem.

It spread to the first and second floors of the industrial facility.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue (GMFRS) said: “At around 9.20pm this evening (February 18), we received reports of a fire at an industrial site on Tilson Road, Manchester.

“Five fire engines from Wythenshawe, Altrincham, Cheadle and Whitehill fire stations are currently at the scene, as is an aerial platform from Stretford.

“Employees quickly arrived and accessed the property, where they discovered the fire had spread to the first and second floors of the facility.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are currently using two hose reels and ground monitors to tackle the blaze and prevent further spread.”

An update from the fire department said the fire was now under control, but residents were advised to stay indoors as there was still a lot of smoke in the air.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service tweeted: “10 fire engines are currently at the scene of a fire involving an industrial unit on Tilson Road, Manchester.

“Crews have brought the incident under control but the fire is still generating smoke, and people in the area are advised to close their windows and doors.”
