Firefighters are tackling the blaze in Seaford Meadow following wildfire warnings

FIRE crews have been called in to tackle a grass fire that broke out after warnings were given of the risk of serious wildfires in Sussex.

Firefighters from East Sussex Fire and Rescue have been called to Seaford after a report of gorse being affected by fire at 7.24pm last night.

Around 75 square meters of grassland were affected by the fire, which was surrounded by firefighters by 11:33 p.m.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said the area was inspected again this morning, with another inspection due to take place around 1pm.

It comes as the West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (WSFRS) has warned the public about the dangers of crickets in grassland areas after wildfire devastated two acres of land near Littlehampton Harbour.

A spokeswoman for WSFRS said: “The Met Office’s Fire Severity Index shows the risk of wildfires in West Sussex this weekend is very high.

“As such, it is extremely important that residents and visitors to the county take extra care not to accidentally start a wildfire.”
