FIRE crews from across Sussex have been called in to tackle a major field fire amid warnings of the prospect of serious wildfires in the county.
West Sussex Fire and Rescue reported a high number of 999 calls after the fire broke out on Upper Kingston Lane in Southwick.
Two fire engines and three SUVs from Shoreham, Haywards Heath and East Sussex Fire and Rescue worked to put out the blaze, with firefighters remaining at the scene.
UPDATE: About an acre of straw was affected by the fire.

About a hectare of straw was affected by the fire.
The blaze comes as the Met Office warns that fires that break out earlier in the weekend could be “exceptionally severe” due to ongoing droughts across the county and the return of the heatwave, with temperatures reaching the mid-30s.
