First Dates’ Merlin Griffiths talks colon cancer in 2021

First Dates barman Merlin Griffiths has thanked the NHS for saving his life as he shared an amazing photo of himself from a hospital bed.

The 46-year-old looked tired as she posted a selfie to Twitter as he admitted he was in “pain” but “didn’t have a tumour”.

Last year he announced he had been diagnosed with colon cancer and vowed it “wouldn’t take over [him]”.

The father of one was told by doctors he had a 75 per cent chance of living more than five years after medics found a 4.5 cm stage three tumor.

And on Thursday, Merlin prepared to prepare for surgery to remove the tumor while wearing a unicorn face mask.

He shared the photo on Instagram and wrote: “Ready like never before. tumor removal time. #bowelcancerwarenessmonth.”

Merlin took to social media early in the morning after the surgery and wrote: “2am. Hoses out everywhere. aches and pains. But no tumor! #bowelcancerwarenessmonth.”

He added on Twitter: “Thank you #NHS for literally saving my life. #BowelCancerAwarenessMonth.”

Merlin announced last month that he would have robotic surgery to remove the tumor.

The TV bartender, who owns a pub in Lancashire, wrote in March: “Operation planned. 3 weeks to pull myself together. Robotic surgery, welcome to the future!”

In robotic surgery, surgeons control the arms of a machine with four limbs that hold surgical instruments and a camera. The doctors see the operation through a magnified screen.

Merlin previously described the moment he had to explain his diagnosis to his seven-year-old daughter Alix.

He recalls, “I said, ‘Dad has cancer.’ She said, ‘Is that bad, Dad?’

“I said, ‘Yes, it’s very serious, but I think it should be okay. Modern medicine is great and if anything changes I’ll let you know.”

“She understands that people can die, but I told her that cancer comes in different forms and in different ways – and that many people get through it.”
