First phase of ‘world-class’ Westmeath studio receives planning approval

An application to plan the construction of a film studio in Mullingar has received approval from Westmeath County Council.

ammerlake Studios, expected to be Ireland’s largest film, television and content studio, will be built at Lough Sheever Corporate Park in Mullingar.

The council will make a final decision on planning permission in September.

The first phase of construction on the 25-acre site is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2024. This phase will focus on the construction of four studios, workshops, administrative buildings, technology center and editorial room.

This build phase is expected to take a year, creating 350 production roles and 300 construction jobs.

The second phase of development will be submitted for planning approval next summer and will see seven more studios added to the 460,000 sqft Hammerlake Studios campus.

This will add 1,000 more production jobs on campus.

The leadership team behind the studio’s plans includes members of the film industry with prior experience at Universal Pictures, Disney and Troy Studios.

Executive film producers from North America also advise on campus layout and design.

Hammerlake Studios CEO Paul Chesney said the approval from Westmeath County Council marks “an important step forward in our plans to build a world-class content and film production facility.” in Mullingar, a facility capable of hosting the biggest and best film productions.

“Ours will be not just a functional service-oriented work studio, but a destination that offers everything a production organization would need, from creative support, technology, equipment and secure data capabilities, along with first-class catering and off-stage filming capabilities all on one campus,” he added.

Studio development and operations director Tom Dowling said Ireland currently has three major studio facilities but demand has skyrocketed in recent years.

“Mullingar close to Dublin, its excellent road and rail network, young workforce and range of quality hotels fit our criteria for the location of our new green and sustainable studio campus. me,” he said.
