After struggling for minutes with his prey, he and some onlookers were shocked when the giant shark jumped out of the water.

A video posted by Joel online shows the giant creature break water several times trying to catch the stream before it finally swam away.

The shark appeared to be a juvenile about 2.5m long – only half the size it might one day grow.

Talking to Things“My partner and I went kayaking in the same place the other day,” says Joel.

“No one has been seen around here, only small hammerheads or bronze whales. It was an enjoyable experience. ”

The battle with the monster drew a small crowd of excited onlookers, many of whom lived near the bay.

“Everybody was pretty scared and surprised at the same time because they swam there not too long ago. They were locals and said they had never seen such a great white around before that day,” added Joel.

The close encounter happened in the Bay of Plenty, on New Zealand’s North Island.

It happened a few days after the local Department of Conservation warned to remain vigilant following the recent increase in see sharks around the area.

Although exact numbers cannot be confirmed, at least six great whites have been identified along the coastline since May 2020.

“If you’re visiting the ocean, you need to be a little alert about what’s going on around you and swim where there’s a surf lifeguard patrol, and not swim or diving alone.

“If you are going on water, be careful and avoid swimming in the main canals, where many birds dive or fly in from kayaks and jet skis when fishing.”

Great whites are protected under New Zealand law, which means that while catching a great white by accident is not illegal, it must be released immediately and the capture should also be reported. .
