Fishermen were amazed after catching a translucent “alien” creature with huge claws.

The shocked fisherman reeled in the strange-looking sea creature – believed to be part of the species that inspired the Alien movie.

The video, titled “Tell Me This Isn’t An Alien,” was posted to social media and shows a strange creature with a small, transparent, jelly-like, barrel-shaped outer layer.

It’s unclear exactly where the clip was filmed, but the species’ habitat, named Phronima, roams freely in the open waters around the world, with the exception of the polar regions. Daily Star reported.

In the clip, the confused US-accented fisherman squeezes the animal’s outer jelly layer, revealing a bestial clawed shape inside.

The two components are separate, with the beast inside actually acting as a parasite in a host that it may or may not have killed itself.

According to parasite expert Katie O’Dwyer, writing for The Conversation, the phronima detach themselves from the ocean floor and benefit from another marine animal, the salp, to survive in the open water.

Katie says salps are barrel-shaped, gelatinous zooplankton that drift through the oceans – and the phronima climbs into the salp’s “barrel” to make a temporary home for itself.

Phronima carves away the interior of the salp with its huge claws to leave an empty barrel structure.

The species should be considered a parasitoid rather than a parasite because it actively kills its host, O’Dwyer points out.

In late 2020, several Phronima were washed up on the beach at Streedagh, Sligo on Ireland’s Atlantic coast following the enormous waves caused by Hurricane Epsilon.

Melinda Swann, a freelance ecologist in Sligo, wrote in Sligo Champion: “The first time they were recorded in Ireland was in 1985 by marine biologist Dr. Dan Minchin, a longtime family friend.

“These crustaceans fire the imagination, as HR Geiger must have thought!”

It is widely believed that the specimen was the inspiration for HR Geiger’s drawings for Ridley Scott’s 1979 film Alien.
