Colombia: Grandstand of bullring in Tolima collapses

At least five people have died after part of a stadium collapsed during an annual bullfight – hundreds more are said to have been injured.

Footage shared online from Tolima, Colombia, shows people ring-hopping with a bull during the year Festivals of San Juan and San Pedro.

As the camera pans to the right, you can see the grandstand collapsing into the ring. Official figures have not been released by authorities, but some local reports estimate as many as 500 were injured and a politician was quoted as saying at least four were killed.

Ricardo Orozco, the governor of Tolima, told local radio that at least four people were killed, including two women, a man and a child, and another 60 were injured. RedMas reports.

Mayor Juan Carlos Tamayo Salas told local media: “I would like to ask the citizens who are in the bullring to evacuate it.

“The control authorities are already dealing with the emergency and the wounded have already been evacuated to hospitals.”

During this afternoon’s chaos, nine people who jumped into the ring with the bull were injured, including six who were taken to hospital with serious injuries, local news reported.

The bull, who was also in the ring, managed to escape and caused panic among local residents in the area. El Tiempo reports.

Major Luis Fernando Vélez, Director of Civil Protection in Tolima, said infobae: “There is a patient with serious injuries, he was taken to the hospital in critical condition.”

Ever Sarmiento, secretary of the municipal administration, added: “Unfortunately, people who enter the Corralejo irresponsibly cannot be controlled, but we guarantee safety and that the community has healthy fun in the celebrations of the patron saint.”

After this afternoon’s tragedy, the President of Colombia has instructed the mayors to stop the bull shows.

He tweeted: “I hope that all the people affected by the collapse of Plaza de El Espinal come out of their wounds unharmed.

“It had happened before in Sincelejo. I’m asking the mayors not to authorize any more shows involving the deaths of people or animals.”
