FIVE major Freeway Code rule changes will take effect after DAYS – aimed at protecting cyclists.

The new changes are new to most motorists, with a third saying they were unaware the rules were being revised.

However, experts have warned that the policy changes could cause more incidents on the roads and increase discontent among cyclists.

The Highways Code includes advice and rules for people on UK roads and a total of 49 existing rules will also be updated with the new amendments.

It is set to be updated on January 29 while parliament gives final approval to introduce a road user risk-based hierarchy.

Under the new rules, cyclists will be encouraged to ride in the middle of the line, ride in two rows and have priority to turn around when they are riding on either side of the vehicle.

Cyclists are also no longer required to use the track even when they are on it, and drivers should leave 5 feet of clearance when they pass cyclists.

The changes are expected to go into effect next Saturday, but charities and advocacy groups have warned that they are not yet known to the public.

Neil Greig, policy and research director at IAM RoadSmart, a road safety charity, told the Times: “Many motorists will think that someone is cycling in the middle of the lane ahead. they are deliberately running slow. them down.

“That leads to road rage and rage and inappropriate overtaking. People need to know all these changes at once for it to work. ”

The British Drivers’ Union says the changes are potentially dangerous.

A spokesman said: “The proposed road user hierarchy could create or exacerbate grievances and ill-feelings among different classes of road users, and could leads to irresponsible behavior of cyclists and pedestrians.”

One in three motorists are unaware of the major changes, with 4% admitting they have “no intention” of going through the details.

The AA accused the Government of being “too silent” about the changes, but the Department for Transport (DfT) insisted it would make sure “all road users know”.

Jack Cousens, AA’s head of road policy, said: “With one more week to go, too many motorists are unaware of the new rules of the road.

“While the Government officially announced these changes last summer, they have been too quiet in promoting them.


“Incredibly, one in 25 motorists say they have no intention of considering the new regulations.

“These changes affect everyone, so we encourage everyone to read the updated code now so we can make our roads more secure.”

DfT interim figures show 4,290 pedestrians and 4,700 cyclists were killed or seriously injured in crashes on UK roads in the year to the end of June 2021.

Duncan Dollimore, head of campaigns at charity Cycling UK, said changes to the Highways Code would come “soon” so the lack of official publicity was “difficult” bear”.

This, he warns, “doesn’t help”. “Neither pedestrians nor cyclists are rules intended to protect, nor are motorists who are somehow telepathically aware of them.”

A DfT spokesman said: “The proposed upcoming changes to the Highway Code will improve safety for cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders and have been communicated to national press.

“The department has established a working group of key organizations to ensure that messages about the changes are as widespread as possible and our well-established Think! campaign will continue to ensure that All road users are aware both when these changes take effect and after.”
