Five men arrested in connection with the fatal attack of Dylan McCarthy in Monasterevin

Five men (aged 20) have been arrested by Gardaí investigating the death of Limerick man Dylan McCarthy in an attack in Monasterevin, Co Kildare late last month.

r McCarthy, 29, from Kilmallock, Co Limerick, was found unresponsive in Monasterevin on the night of August 21st. He had dated members of his family.

He was taken to Tallaght University Hospital but later died from his injuries.

“As part of the ongoing investigation into the incident of a serious assault in Monasterevin, Co Kildare on 21 August 2022, Gardaí have arrested five men this morning, Tuesday 27 September 2022,” a Garda spokesman said.

“The men, all in their 20s, are currently being held at several Garda stations in Co Kildare under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

“The investigation is ongoing.”

Mr McCarthy was buried at his home parish in late August. Hundreds of mourners attended his funeral service.

At his funeral service, McCarthy’s mother, Marita, thanked Tallaght Hospital staff for their support and valiant efforts in trying to save her son.

“Her professionalism and caring for Dylan and her kindness to us will never be forgotten,” she said.

“We are so grateful and overwhelmed by our community, especially the GAA, for the Honor Guard over the past few days. The candlelight vigil (Friday night) was so comforting and an example of why Kilmallock is the best place in Ireland and arguably the world.”

Mr McCarthy’s father Eamon suffered facial injuries in the incident that claimed his son’s life. He was treated at Portlaoise Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Dylan McCarthy was well known in local GAA circles and Kilmallock hurler Graeme Mulcahy’s Limerick jersey, which won All Ireland three times in a row and was presented to Mr McCarthy’s family after his death, was placed next to his coffin next to his own Hurley.
