Five meter high doll comes to Crawley for the 75th anniversary

A FIVE METERS tall puppet goes on tour to celebrate the 75th anniversary of a Sussex town.

The puppet, named Aura, was created by a Yorkshire-based theater company and is visiting Crawley this week as part of their ‘Odyssey’ in the UK.

Her journey to the city began today at Gatwick Airport, where she greeted passengers arriving and departing from the airport, and will continue tomorrow from 11am to 3pm with an open-top coach tour of Crawley.

On Saturday, the puppet’s journey up the High Street will be greeted by a live band at Brewery Shades, with The Comic Shop Aura showcasing a giant comic book made by local people.

Aura also receives a giant library card when she becomes a member of the local library, and is sung to a lullaby written by mothers in Crawley and the Murmuration Arts theater company.

City residents will then bid farewell to the doll at an event in Tilgate Park, featuring live music and art by the city’s up-and-coming artists.

Crawley is one of only two locations outside of Yorkshire that the doll is visiting this year.

The doll is part of a reinvention of the story of the Trojan Wars in Greek mythology, in which a city was sacked after welcoming a wooden horse with soldiers hiding inside.

Developed by the Animated Objects Theater Company, Aura is a young civilian survivor of the conflict.

While the area had been inhabited since the Stone Age and developed into a market town from the 13th century, Crawley was designated a ‘new town’ in 1947 as part of a government project to resettle people living in poor or damaged housing after World War II.

The city, which is now home to more than 110,000 people, missed out on receiving city status in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Civic Honors earlier this year.

Notable people from Crawley include rapper Akala, comedian Romesh Ranganathan, TV presenter Dan Walker, athlete Daley Thompson and England manager and former footballer Gareth Southgate. Five meter high doll comes to Crawley for the 75th anniversary
