Floods and torrential downpours hit parts of Ireland while Met Éireann issues a thunderstorm and lightning warning

Parts of Ireland are set to experience torrential downpours and flooding over the weekend as Met Éireann also warned of possible thunderstorms and lightning strikes.

In an update released on Saturday, the national forecaster said intermittent torrential rain would come in local outbreaks and that it would cause surface flooding in affected areas.

Met Éireann had earlier warned of disruption due to inclement weather, including for the 70,000 people attending the Electric Picnic in Stradbally, Co Laois this weekend.

There is also a chance of lightning and thunderstorms, as well as intermittent very heavy rain Saturday night and into Sunday.

“Initially there will be clear spells and scattered showers, but then a sustained shower accompanied by local thunder and strengthening south-easterly winds will sweep north across the country. The rain will be very heavy in places with the possibility of local flooding with some lightning strikes,” said meteorologist Conall Ruth.

“Heavy rain will move north across much of the country tonight, clearing up from the north and northwest on Sunday morning. Partly torrential downpours are expected, which lead to superficial flooding. There is also a possibility of thunderstorm activity and lightning strikes,” Met Éireann said in an updated yellow weather warning on Saturday morning.

Heavy rain, along with thunder and lightning, will ease in the northwest Sunday morning, but southeasterly winds will remain blustery at times.

Sunday afternoon and early evening will be largely sunny with only isolated showers before another heavy rain band moves in from the southwest.

The weather is forecast to be highly variable with wet and windy conditions forecast for the next week.

At the beginning of next week, the weather on Monday and Tuesday is likely to be mixed with scattered showers and sunshine.
