Dave Grohl’s fine words about Taylor Hawkins have resurfaced after the drummer’s sudden death at the age of 50.
The Foo Fighters frontman has never had anything but wonderful things to say about his bandmate, whom he has described as his “best friend” and “soul animal.”
Taylor joined the rock band in 1997 after being contacted by Dave – an acquaintance at the time – who wanted recommendations for a new drummer.
Former drummer William Goldsmith left the band after a falling out with ex-Nirvana star Dave, who played drums on a re-recording of an album, before looking for a new member.
At the time, Taylor was the drummer for Alanis Morrisette, and while Dave wanted him for his own lineup, he didn’t think Taylor would give up the gig.
He once told LA radio station 95.5 Klos, “When it came time to start looking for a drummer, I wished he would, but I didn’t think he would leave Alanis Morissette because she was too.” was the greatest artist in the world at the time.
“So when I called him and said, ‘Hey, I’m looking for a drummer’. He said, ‘You know I’m your type’. And I think it had more to do with our personal relationship than anything musical. “
“And to be honest, it still does. Our musical relationship, the basis of that is our friendship and that’s why we’re so connected when we jump on stage and play because we’re like best friends and it’s great. “
Describing the moment they met, Dave added: “Oh my god. When we first met, we were backstage on a radio show and he walked up with a beer in hand.
“He’s like, ‘Hey man, what’s up? I’m Taylor, I’m playing with Alanis Morissette. Dude I love your record it’s so cool!’ I thought, ‘Wow, you’re either my twin or my spirit animal or my best friend!’
“The first 10 seconds I met him. And of course I had seen him play the drums and I thought he was a great drummer.”
And Taylor once told it Louder sound: “Despite all our trials and tribulations, Dave is like a brother. Every time we go on stage, we nod, look at each other and say, ‘Okay, let’s go.’ We’ll get in the ring together.”
Foo Fighters today shared the tragic news that Taylor had passed away.
They said in a statement: “The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins.
“His musical spirit and infectious laugh will live on in all of us forever.
“Our hearts go out to his wife, children and family and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect at this unimaginably difficult time.”
Taylor was found dead in a hotel room in Bogota, Colombia, where the band was scheduled to play at a festival.
Reports in Colombia also say that police believe Taylor’s death could be related to narcotics and that he had reportedly complained to hotel staff about chest pains.
The band announced that they will not be performing at the Estéreo Picnic festival in the capital following the tragedy.
